Music Diary Project, Day 2

Yesterday was pretty straightforward, on the surface. You can’t really see some of my weird listening habits here, aside from a bit of alphabetical trickery going on. In the morning I listened to artists in my top 15 for the week according to last.fm and then you can start to see the crazy happen. A lot of people over on Twitter are admitting that this project is totally bringing out their OCD. Well, here’s my insane confession: I make smart playlists for songs that have been played never, once, twice, three times, four times, and more than four times. On Rhythmbox (which is how I listen on Linux) these playlists exclude songs that have been played in the last eight weeks. This is because I listen to music more often on Rhythmbox and I don’t want to get redundant. On iTunes (which in run on Windows), it’s a bit different. Songs that have only been played once exclude those played in the last week, songs played twice exclude those in the last two weeks, and so on. I listen to each of these playlists when the total number of songs in them is any number other than a multiple of 10, and I listen until the number reaches a multiple of 10.

Where did I come up with this system? I have no idea. Though I seem to remember making these complicated constraints not long after installing iTunes for the first time about 6 years ago and not being super happy with their shuffle system. I’m trying to keep things fresh and listen to everything, which is tough when you have something like 1073 days worth of music on your hard drive.

Oh, I should also mention I have another smart playlist of songs that were downloaded a year ago but never listened to. I’m quick to delete stuff on that list from the hard drive if need be.
